This watermelon slushie recipe combines the delicious and summery flavors of fresh watermelon (pureed into juice like our watermelon cocktail) and rosé wine, combined in a slushy machine for the ultimate summer watermelon frosé slushie! It’s so good you’ll want to make a double batch!

This recipe is specifically designed for a dedicated slushie machine (we use the Ninja SLUSHi Machine), rather than a blender.

Watermelon Slushie Ingredients

This super-easy slushie contains 4 easy, flexible ingredients. You can easily make alterations based on what you have on hand.

Ingredients for Watermelon Rosé Slushie with written labels.
  • Fresh Watermelon – We use fresh watermelon and blend it until smooth. Then run it through a sieve to remove any excess pulp. If you find already pureed watermelon juice, you can use that too. Just be mindful of any added sugar!
  • Rosé Wine – We recommend you start with a dry rosé wine, then add sweetness or juice to balance the sweetness to your personal taste.
  • Lime Juice – This brightens things up and adds some acidity. You can also use lemon juice if that’s all you have.
  • Simple Syrup – All slushies made in a dedicated machine (like the Ninja SLUSHi machine) need at least 4% sugar to slush correctly. If your watermelon isn’t sweet enough (watermelon sweetness varies from watermelon to watermelon), then you will want to supplement with some simple syrup or other liquid sweetener (like liquid allulose). You can use the ratios in our blueberry simple syrup to make your own.

As a garnish, we like to add some fresh mint (it’s so lovely and fresh), and a watermelon wedge.

How To Make A Watermelon Slushie

Alcohol-based slushies may take longer to become “slushified” than N/A sugar-based juices. Plan up to 30 minutes for the first batch to freeze properly.

  1. Make Watermelon Juice: Place 4 cups of cubed watermelon in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Pour through a strainer or sieve to remove the solids. This should yield approximately 2 cups of pure watermelon juice.
  2. Prepare: Pour the watermelon juice, rosé wine, lime, and syrup (or other sweetener) into a large pitcher and stir together.
  3. Pour the ingredients into the slushie machine and close the latch. Press the power button, then select the “SPIKED SLUSH” button, or whatever your manufacturer suggests for alcoholic slush drinks, to start the process. The machine will run and be set to the proper temperature.
  4. Wait: Allow the slushy machine to run for 20 – 25 minutes, and the mixture will freeze and become a slushie.
  5. Serve: Once it has reached the proper temperature, you can dispense the Watermelon Frosé Slushie into your favorite glass and garnish with a watermelon wedge and a mint sprig.

Important Tip

Troubleshooting: If your wine-based slushy is not freezing, there are likely two reasons. It either needs more sugar or it needs something to dilute the alcohol. You should not have any more than 15% ABV in your machine, and you need at least 4% of the total volume of sugar. Add a tablespoon of simple syrup or other liquid sugar in small portions until it starts to slush.

Serving Tip

If you plan to run this watermelon frosé slushie for a party or event where you plan to keep topping it off, start with this recipe.

Then, premix the slushie mix in a large pitcher and place in the refrigerator. A cool mixture will become a slushie faster. Top off the watermelon frosé slushie mix when it’s half full so it freezes faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my slushie is not getting to the right texture?

If your Watermelon Frosé Slushie is not freezing, there are likely two reasons: It either needs more sugar or it needs something to dilute the alcohol. You should not exceed 15% ABV in your machine, and you need at least 4% of the total volume of sugar. So you need to balance the two.

Start by adding 1/4 cup simple syrup or other liquid sweetener, in small portions, until it starts to slush.

Most Rosé wines will be roughly 11%-13% ABV (alcohol by volume), so if it’s not getting to the slush texture you want, start by adding more juice to increase the sugar content, or club soda to dilute the alcohol.

How do I make Watermelon Juice?

Remove the watermelon rind and cut into cubes. Place the watermelon cubes into a blender and blend until smooth. You may need to do this in multiple batches. Strain into a pitcher, using a spoon to press the pulp and only extract the juice. This removes any remaining seeds or chunks.

Can I make this ahead of time?

You can make a Watermelon Frosé Slushie in advance if you have a container you can keep in the freezer. We use insulated thermoses. Just make them in advance, and then keep them in the freezer. Remove and let thaw for several minutes before serving.

There are so many fun ways to add variety to this watermelon slushie. You can add any liqueur for more flavor, or keep it non-alcoholic. We love to add strawberry lemonade to the watermelon juice for a non-alcoholic version.
